Bernadette Leone Mercil, 79, of Marion, passed away on Feb. 15, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. A parish vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. The family will greet friends following the vigil service until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Marion. The family also will greet friends one hour prior to Mass at the church. Burial will be at a later date.
Bernie was born on Aug. 21, 1938, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Ed and Bernadette (Reid) Erickson. She married her childhood sweetheart, Doug Mercil, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Minneapolis. He passed away Jan. 14, 2016. They shared a love that endured and a devotion that grew stronger with time. Bernie was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marion.
She is survived by her beloved children, daughters, Lori (Mark) Slesar and Theresa Mohwinkle (Scott Kovarik), and son, John Mercil; daughter-in-law, Diane (Jack) Cirkl; grandchildren, Mike (Amber), Maggie and James (Stephanie) Mercil, Dana (Ray) Bolinger and Sara Regan, Gina and Amy Slesar, Marty Mohwinkle and Melissa (Christian) Smith, and Steven and Lauren Mercil (Arturo Melendez); dear great-grandchildren, Hannah, Madison, Katelyn, James, Jaidyn, Kendyl, Zonona, Harlow, Aliana and Isaiah; and one sister, Audrey Kolstad of Richfield, Minn.
Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, Doug; son, James Louis; and son-in-law, Mark Mohwinkle.
In Bernie's own words: "In case I am taken from you, please know I am overwhelmed by the love of so many people. God bless all of you and I hope you also experience the same in your lifetime. I have a beautiful, loving and strong family and friends. and have had a blessed life!"
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marion, where Bernie was a longtime member.
