Bern, Jean
Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. for Jean Bern, 86, of Cedar Rapids, who died at St. Luke's Hospital on March 1, 2010. Pastor Paul Scheidt will preside at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Born June 28, 1923, in Titonka, Iowa, to Herman and Emma Rachut, Jean graduated from Burt (Iowa) High School in 1940 and Wartburg College in 1943. She taught home economics and business in many Midwestern Iowa towns before marrying Harold Bern in 1949. They lived in Marshalltown before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1956. Jean was the registrar at St. Luke's School of Nursing for 20 years before retiring to enjoy winters in Arizona. She was very active in organizations at Bethany Lutheran Church, St. Luke's Hospital and HEIH.
She is survived by her husband, Harold; daughters, Cyndi (Steve) Scott of Cedar Rapids and Chelain (Marc) Stocker of Evergreen, Colo.; granddaughters, Amanda (Matt) Millhollin of Ohain, Belgium, and Ashley Scott and fiance Jeremy Markisohn of Denver, Colo.; and a great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Millhollin of Belgium.
She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Cherolyn.
Memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church or St. Luke's Hospice.
