Berg, Elwood Christian
Elwood Christian Berg, 70, of Marion, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Jonathan Swenson of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date at Walla Lutheran Church in South Dakota.
Survivors include four children, Twila Duling of Cookeville, Tenn., Lila Takes (Jim Nichols) of Austel, Ga., Cary Berg (Lisa McNeal) of Clearwater, Fla., and Barry (Brenda) Berg of West Liberty; six grandchildren, Monica Duling, Sarah English, Lt. Corey Takes, Eryn Berg, Brooke Nortman and Nicole Richardson; and three sisters, Marian (Alf) Overby of Mount Vernon, Wash., Linda (Roland) Lickness of Fergus Falls, Minn., and Connie (Allen) Rettig of Forest Lake, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant daughter, Crystal.
Elwood was born June 11, 1940, the son of Christian and Irene (Hedstrom) Berg, in Sisseton, S.D. He graduated from New Effington High School in South Dakota. Elwood worked for Rockwell Collins for 35 years.
He was a member of American Legion Post 298 and St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Elwood liked to work with his hands. He could build or fix anything. For many years, woodworking was his passion. Many family and friends were recipients of furniture built by him. In later years, Elwood found an interest in tractors, specifically the Massey-Harris models owned by his father. With the help of friends, Elwood completed his first tractor and they were in the process of completing his second tractor when he became ill.
A memorial fund has been established in Elwood's memory.
