Bennett, Tyrone 'Ty' Lee
Tyrone “Ty” Lee Bennett, 73, of Swisher, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 21, at the Swisher American Legion, with the Rev. Glenn Hunt presiding. Burial, with full military rites, will be conducted at Anderson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. The family requests everyone to dress casual for the service.
Tyrone was born Feb. 17, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Gerald and Mabel (Hill) Bennett. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1957. He served in the United States Navy from 1958 - 1962. He married Janet “Jan” Cihla on July 6, 1958, in Cedar Rapids. Ty worked at General Mills for over 24 years until retiring in 2006.
He was an avid member of the Swisher American Legion since 1976. Ty enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, golfing, boating, camping, and especially the time spent with his family.
Ty is survived by his wife, Jan; children, Gerald “Jerry” (Angie) Bennett of Cedar Rapids, Teri (Jim) Fortmann of Marion, Chris Bennett of Cedar Rapids and Darla Bennett of Western; six grandchildren, Marisa (Mike) Malloy, Eric (Abby) Bennett, Natasha Bennett, Travis Bennett, Emily Bennett and Bridget Bennett; five great-grandchildren, Allie, Alex, Hallie, Conner and Austynne and one on the way; two sisters, Geraldine “Jerry Sue” (Bob) Teel of Cedar Rapids and Dawn (Bob) Ballinger of Toledo; an aunt, Winifred Murray of Greenville, Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Ty was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tyrone Bennett Jr.; an infant daughter, Wendy Sue Bennett; a great-grandson, Thomas Bennett; and a sister, Tami Taylor.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Mercy for their love and care for Ty.
