Belva Leona Yoss was born on June 1, 1920, near North English, Iowa, the daughter of Walter Wayne and Jennie Belva (Butterbaugh) Wade. She grew up in Filmore Township, rural Iowa County, and graduated from North English High School. She was united in marriage to Don Howard Yoss on March 31, 1944, in North English. They farmed near North English and South English until moving into town in 1964. Belva was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, former member of the Rebekkah Lodge and attended the North English United Methodist Church. Belva was a homemaker and was an Avon representative for 36 years. Belva was a director at the North English Community Center for many years. She received the Governor's Volunteer award in 1981. Belva enjoyed crocheting, cooking and was an avid Hawkeye fan and local sports. She died on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City. Belva lived 94 years.
She is survived by two sons, Michael D. (Cathy) Yoss of North English and Scott J. (Ronda) Yoss of Webster; nine grandchildren, including Tammy (Mark) Stanerson whom Belva raised; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel (Glenn) Cobb of North English.
Belva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in July 1986; a daughter, Lucinda "Cindy" Vitt; sister, Evelyn Kurtz; and brothers, Walter and Harold Wade.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for North English Community Center, The United Methodist Church or the North English Library.
