Irene Marie Beatty, 99, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with Pastor Mike Ferguson officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery near Shellsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m Friday.
Irene was born Aug. 10, 1914, at Ringsted, to Martin and Bertha (Ehlers) Rinderknecht. Following graduation from high school, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On June 27, 1936, she was united in marriage to O. Earl Beatty in Davenport. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 1985.
Before her marriage, Irene taught in a country school. She enjoyed membership at the First Presbyterian Church in Shellsburg for over 50 years. She loved gardening and always fed the birds. She traveled to all 50 states and to Europe and Japan. She was also a member of P.W., Sorosis Club and Farm Bureau Canton Homemakers. She loved playing cards in several bridge clubs, weekly Skip-Bo Games and eating out with friends.
She is survived by her children, Gary (Viv) Beatty of Atkins, Dwight (Charlene) Beatty of Shellsburg, Dr. Dwayne (Madeline) Beatty of Miami, Fla. and Joan (Gary) Wright of Lake Elmo, Minn.; her grandchildren, Shelley, Debbie, Jill, Eric, Angela, Todd, Scott, Jennifer, Brian and Darren; 23 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Alice Berg Owens of Marion.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Norman Beatty in September 1959; her brothers, Hank and Raymond Rinderknecht; her sisters, Wilma Penney and Ella Krug; and a special friend, Russell Graham.
