Irene Baxter
(Mary) Irene Baxter, 94, died peacefully on Nov. 5, 2013. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a vigil service will be at 4:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Regina Elementary School, St. Thomas More Church, St. Patrick's Church, or Mercy Hospital Foundation for the hospice unit.
Irene was born July 9, 1919, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Marie (Hogan) McLachlan. Irene was a graduate of City High School and Irish Business College. She was united in marriage to James R. Baxter on June 16, 1947, in Iowa City at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Irene worked at the Strub Department Store, managed the apparel department of Towner's and later managed Frankels' Fashions with her husband, Jim.
Irene was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and later worked as the parish secretary until her retirement.
Irene was a member of the Tri T's and the Altrusa Club. Most important to Irene was her family.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the caregivers at Crestview Care Center in West Branch and to Mercy's Hospice Unit for their support during Irene's illness.
Irene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Steve Lacina of Iowa City; three grandchildren, spouses and great-grandchildren, James and Rachael Lacina and their children, Paige and Evan of Iowa City, Katie Lacina Farley and her children, Ellie and Norah Farley of Davenport and Marty and Melissa Lacina and their children, Claire and Charlotte of Coralville; one sister, Mildred Wilson of Mesa, Ariz.; a nephew and four nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; and one brother, Leonard McLachlan of Iowa City.
