Bateman, Richard C.
Richard C. Bateman, 72, of Independence, passed away peacefully on Aug. 16, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications of lung cancer surrounded by his family. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Dick was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Charles City, Iowa. His parents were Violette Isham Bateman and Richard C. Isham, stepfather, Jack L. Bateman, and stepmother, Wilma Isham.
After graduation from Lincoln High School in Webster City, he joined the U.S. Army, spending most of his enlistment in Munich, Germany. Later he joined the U.S. Air Force in Denver, Colo., and was stationed at Altus AFB, Okla. In 1961, he married Jean Berven from Stanhope. They had two children: Trent Bateman, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jill (Rich) Haberkorn, Clayton, N.C. He lived most of his life in the cities of Denver and Grand Junction, Colo., and Salt Lake City, where he was employed in the industrial electrical business.
His passions included reading, golf, football, history, travel and, most of all, his grandchildren: Andrew, Abbie, Alexander and Aaron Haberkorn.
He is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; sisters, Diane (Carl) Huerta, Denver, Colo., Carolynn (Paul) Pitman, Manchester, Mass., Jane (Robert) Wheatley, Reno, Nev.; brothers, William (Lynn) Isham, Jonathan (Janet) Isham and Christopher Isham, all of Independence; in-laws, Boyd and Ruth Berven, Webster City; brother- in- law, Bruce (Ann) Berven of Ankeny; plus his nieces, nephews and many friends he made along the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
