Barnes, Elsie Dorthea
Elsie Dorthea Barnes, 83, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Mercy Hospice Unit in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Elsie's name can be made to Mercy Hospice (Mercy Foundation). Online condolences can be sent to her family through the Web at .
Elsie Dorthea Krogh was born Dec. 29, 1929, near Iowa City, the daughter of Alfred and Regina (Nielsen) Krogh. She graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1947, and married Earl Barnes a short time later on Aug. 21, 1948, in Iowa City.
Elsie worked for many years at the University of Iowa, retiring in 1991. She enjoyed working with the students and faculty alike and was always true to the university as a loyal Hawkeye fan.
She was a supportive mother and grandmother; she loved attending her grandchildren's athletic events and took great pride in their achievements.
Her family includes her husband of 65 years, Earl Barnes Sr.; sons and their wives, Earl “Bill” Barnes Jr. of Iowa City, Phil (Carol) Barnes of West Branch, Jerry (Judy) Barnes of Iowa City, and Steve (Becky) Barnes of Iowa City; grandchildren, JP (Heather) Krogh, Amy (Rush) Brentlinger, Nathan (Lisette) Barnes, Joel (Fallon Smith) Barnes, Christina, Nicholas, Cody, Zachary, Katilynn, Ashley and Jessica Barnes; eight great-grandchildren and one yet to be born; and siblings, Paul (Mildred) Krogh and Betty Best.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ernest (Charlotte) Krogh and Gunnar (Betty Mae) Krogh; daughter-in-law, Jan Barnes; and brother-in-law, Roland Best.
