BARBARA S. SURBER
Hulbert, Okla.
Barbara S. Surber, 67, of Hulbert, Okla., passed away on Friday, April 30, 2021. She was born on May 29, 1953, in Chicago, Ill., to Helen and Richard Porter, and grew up in Creston, Iowa, after her mother remarried to Richard Riedel. Being raised on a farm with a blended family, her childhood was full of roaming, exploring, mischief, spontaneity and memories she cherished her entire life.
As Barbara started life on her own as an adult, she moved to Des Moines, where she met her husband, Kevin. They met at a bookstore, beginning a lifelong companionship that took several different forms throughout the years. Together, they welcomed son Ryan and daughter Megan. Nothing meant more to Barbara than the love she had for them, and she continued that love for her grandchildren, Alivia and Noah.
Barbara worked as a dedicated secretary, with her career taking her to St. Luke's Family Counseling, Communications Studies at the University of Iowa, and Northeastern State University in Optometry. In retirement, she enjoyed walking with her beloved dogs at Sequoyah State Park or just listening to nature while sitting on her porch with a jar of sun tea nearby
Barbara was preceded in death by mother, Helen Riedel; father, Richard Porter; stepfather, Richard Riedel; sister, Tammy Broschat and Kevin Surber; and son, Ryan Surber.
She is survived by daughter, Megan Surber; grandchildren, Alivia and Noah Surber; sister, Nancy James; and other family and loved ones.
