Barbara Fischer, 79, of Cedar Rapids, went home to be with the Lord on Monday April 2, 2018.
Barbara was born in Chicago, Ill., on Sept. 20, 1938. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Linnea Bornhoeft.
Barbara is survived by her husband, David Fischer; and her brothers, Don (Caryl) Bornhoeft, James (Linda) Bornhoeft and Mike (Sheila) Bornhoeft. She is also survived by three sons, Kevin (Colleen) Fischer of Cedar Rapids, Tom (Elizabeth) Fischer of Centennial, Colo., and John (Jane) Fischer of Cedar Rapids; and one daughter, Kathryn (Devon) Goetz of West Des Moines. Barbara had 14 grandchildren, Hannah (Ben) Roush, Katelyn Goetz, Kirsten (Chris) Dickinson, Caroline (Wade) Morris, Brennan Fischer, Maggie Goetz, Jack Fischer, Jake Goetz, Jeff Goetz, Tom Fischer, Audrey Fischer, David Fischer, Brian Fischer and John Fischer; including two loving great-grandchildren, Rowan Roush and Lenni Rose.
Barbara attended the University of Illinois, where she met her loving husband, David. They were married in June 1960. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and graduated with a degree in special education. Barbara taught special education in the Cedar Rapids public schools for 20 years. She had a loving place in her heart for children, particularly those with special needs. She also volunteered in the gift shop at Mercy Medical Center and was a member of the PEO, Home Garden Club and Questers.
Barbara loved to travel and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed spending the winter months in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., especially watching the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico with her friends.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Cedar Memorial Chapel State Room with a vigil service beginning at 4 p.m. Funeral services for Barbara will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, at St. Jude Catholic Church. Barbara will be laid to rest at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
