Baker, Michelle
Michelle Baker died Sept. 26, 2012, at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Oct. 6 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, by the Rev. Gary Krapfl.
Michelle was born June 26, 1946, to Harry and Sally Piekarski in Chicago, Ill. Her father later changed the family name for business reasons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Mary and Sandra.
Mitzi graduated from the University of Illinois as an administrative dietitian. For some years she ran the food service at Loras College in Dubuque. Most especially, she enjoyed meeting the young Catholic priests, feeding them royally and encouraging them along the way. Employment by Marriott brought her to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. As long as she was able, Mitzi enjoyed baking, cooking, vocal music with a community choir, and needlework. She served as lector and was a team member in the process for adults entering the Catholic Church. She always said that St. Pius Parish was her other home and her only family.
Unable to work full time due to MS, Mitzi valiantly struggled to advance her computer skills for part time work. Eventually, her illness made even that impossible and she retired to assisted living facilities.
Grateful thanks to Hospice of Mercy and Willow Gardens Care Center.
Memorials in her name may be sent to St. Pius X Parish.
