Audrey A. Harwood, 88, formerly of Vinton, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at First Baptist Church in Vinton, with Pastor John Karrick officiating. Private burial in Evergreen Cemetery will take place before the service. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.
Audrey was born March 14, 1928, in rural Vinton, the daughter of Harold and Bernice (Lyons) King. She was raised and attended school in Vinton. On Dec. 30, 1944, she married Wayne Harwood in Vinton. The couple farmed in the Dysart area until 1978, when they moved to Vinton, where she continued working at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School until 1988. She was a member of First Baptist Church. In her spare time, Audrey enjoyed painting.
She is survived by two sons, Ron (Chris) of Atkins and Dann (Shari) of Norway; a daughter, Judy Banes of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Jim (Carol) Harwood, Kim Peterson (Corey Campbell), Tami (Steve) Meyers, Cari (Don) Martin, Tim (Deanna) Banes and Stacie Harwood; two stepgranddaughters, Leia (Harold) Engle and Kristin (Sean) Boies; 26 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Hoefle of Vinton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2001; a son-in-law, Richard Banes; a great- granddaughter, Ellie Banes; and three sisters, Dorothy Tumilty, Virginia Millard and Lois Yerkes.
