AUDREY JUNE CARFRAE
Des Moines
Audrey June Carfrae, 97, passed away Aug. 23, 2017, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.
Audrey was born in Wilmont, Minn., on Feb. 19, 1920, the only child of Walter and Esther Shelquist. Her family eventually moved to Cedar Rapids, where she graduated from Franklin
High School. Audrey's Coe College experience was interrupted by an elopement with the love of her life, Robert J. Carfrae, on April 30, 1942. Audrey was a war bride, and they began their marriage living at the Great Lakes Naval Station. After the war, Audrey and Bob made their home in Cedar Rapids, eventually relocating to Marshalltown, Carroll, and back to Cedar Rapids in 1966.
Audrey was the consummate mother, friend and volunteer, and an avid bridge player.
She moved to Des Moines in her later years to be closer to children and grandchildren.
Audrey is survived by her three daughters, Elizabeth Haines (Dennis) of Marion, Janet Bishop (Michael) of Solon and Mary Culp (Matthew) of Des Moines; daughter--in-law, Deana Carfrae of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Robert and William; infant granddaughter, Ann Marie Haines; and daughter-in-law, Stephanie Carfrae.
The family would like to thank the staff at Calvin Community for the loving compassionate care they gave to our mother over the last year.
A celebration of life service will be held later. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvin Community, Taylor Hospice House (both in Des Moines) or a charity of your choice.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.iowacremation.com under Obituaries.
