Athena "Jean" Kanellis Booth, 94, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Palo, died Sunday, May 3, 2015, at Northbrook Manor Care Center following a long illness. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home by Pastor Erika Uthe. Burial: Palo Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Jean is survived by her children, Jolene (James) Maxson of Cedar Rapids, Gail (Michael) Rhinehart of Center Point and Wendell (Sandra) Booth of Palo; grandchildren, Jami Maxson, Jason Maxson, Troy (Jodi) Booth, Tony (Jamie) Booth, Eric (Danielle) Hansen and Tiffany (Ryan) Phillips; and six great-grandchildren.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin (1995); brothers, George, David, Vaughn, Richard, Eldan and Bill; and sister, Arlene.
Athena Jean was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Olean, N.Y., the daughter of James George and Elda Grace (Ruttenbur) Kanellis. She married Edwin Clair Booth on April 12, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo. She began her 40-year teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Linn County and retired in 1983 from Taylor School in Cedar Rapids. Even after her retirement Jean still continued to tutor many children.
