Asmussen, Velma
Velma Asmussen, 94, of Toledo, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Iowa Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 11, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo, is assisting with the arrangements.
Velma was born April 29, 1918, in Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Agnes (Pusteoska) Snider. She graduated from Toledo High School in 1936. After high school, she worked as a telephone operator. She was united in marriage to LaVerne W. Asmussen on May 14, 1941, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. They spent much of the next 40 years farming in the Tama-Toledo area. She enjoyed raising chickens and ducks, selling eggs and caring for a large garden. They greatly enjoyed dancing, particularly square dancing. Velma was a wonderful cook and enjoyed memberships in the Farm Bureau and Homemakers. She was also a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama and Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary.
Preceding her in death were here parents; her husband, LaVerne on March 30, 2005; and her twin sister, Alma Parizek.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Jean (Ted) Johnson of Rock Island, Ill.; granddaughters, Christina Johnson of Dillon, Colo. and Julianne Johnson of Chicago.
A memorial fund has been established.
