Former Iowa state Sen. Arthur A. Small Jr., 81, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at Oaknoll Retirement Community in Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at St.
Thomas More Catholic Church, Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mary Jo Small Fellowship Award c/o The University of Iowa Foundation.
Small served in the Iowa House of Representatives (1971-1979) and the Iowa Senate (1979-1987), representing Iowa City and neighboring communities. A Democrat, Small was known politically for his support of progressive policies, and of the University of Iowa and the other regents' universities.
Small was born Oct. 14, 1933, in Brunswick, Maine, the son of Arthur and Alice (Crimmins) Small. Following studies at Bowdoin College and a stint in the U.S. Army, he attended graduate school in English at the University of Iowa. There he met, and, in 1960, married Mary Jo O'Callaghan, who became his best friend and inseparable political and life partner. Mary Jo Small preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2009.
Arthur is survived by three children, Peter Small of Iowa City, Martha Small of Fort Collins, Colo., and Arthur Small of State College, Pa.; grandchildren, Victor, Clara and Anne Bader and Zoe Small; and sisters, Mary Eckton of Reading, Pa., and Helen Small of Brunswick, Maine.
