ARNOLD SOUKUP
Lisbon
Arnold "Arnie" Dean Soukup, 83, of Lisbon, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, in his home.
He was born May 1, 1933, the son of Lydia and Anton Soukup of Cedar Rapids. He also was the brother of Marvin Soukup and Dorothy Horak, both deceased.
He is survived by his daughters, Ellen
Townsen and Diane Yoder; his sons,
Charles and Joe Soukup; and Carol Hauser.
Arnie grew up in the Cedar Rapids area, yet helped tend his sister's farm in Brainerd, Minn., during the summers. He was an exemplary high school football player and track star. After high school, he ran a gas station in Cedar Rapids before enlisting in the Navy during the Korean War on an ammo ship, USS Rainier. After a blind date and nine months of dating, Arnie married Carol Robinson in 1961 and both moved to live in Solon. The Soukup family then moved to a farm in Ely in 1973, whereupon they adopted Joe from Korea and later, Diane, also from Korea. Arnie retired from the farm after 20 years and moved to Lisbon, where he remained until his death.
He was the very proud grandfather of seven beautiful grandkids.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, Aug. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. A private family inurnment will be held in Rogers Grove Cemetery near Ely, whereupon Arnie's ashes will be scattered on what was the family farm's pond.
Memorials and donations may be given to the Salvation Army in Arnold's honor.
Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.broshchapel.com or townsen@comcast.net.
