Arnold Haar, 96, died Sunday, May 22, 2016, at the Vinton Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall with Pastor Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids with graveside military rites. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
A memorial fund has been established for the Vinton Lutheran Home or St. John Lutheran Church.
Arnold was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Menno, S.D., the son of Fred and Emma (Heckenliable) Haar. As a young man, Arnold served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, from January 1941 through September 1945. Arnold served in North Africa and throughout Europe, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. After the service, Arnold farmed in the Newhall area, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the John Ward McGranahan American Legion Post No. 167 in Newhall.
He is survived by his children, Janet Haar of Cedar Rapids and Steve Haar of Atkins; his grandchildren, Jared (Melea), Jacob, Joel and Jaymes; his great-grandchildren, Melody and Violet; and his brothers, Raymond Haar and Arthur Haar, both of Yankton, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna, on Dec. 18, 2015; two brothers, Henry (Gladys) Haar and Herb (Jean) Haar; and three sisters, Annette Haar, Anna (Wallace) Lee and Linda (Don) Merrigan.
