Arnold, Dr. Dorothy 'Jean'
Dr. Dorothy “Jean” Arnold, 89, of Iowa City died peacefully on Sunday, May 23, 2010.
Dr. Arnold was born on April 17, 1921 in Alabama, the daughter James and Jean Arnold. She was the first disabled female to graduate from the University of Alabama Medical College in 1947 and the first female psychiatrist to open up private practice in the state of Iowa in 1957. As a pioneer for women, Dr. Arnold taught at the University of Iowa Hospital, served in several professional organizations, and was a well known face in the psychiatry profession for 38 years. In her retirement, Dr. Arnold published two books of poetry and other smaller writings.
Dr. Arnold is preceded in death by her parents and one sister, “Boots” Archibald. Jean is survived by a niece, Joy Fleming and nephew, Elwyn Archibald, Jr.
Funeral Services will be held at 2pm, Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
