Richard “Dick” M. Armstrong, 79, of Marion, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Inurnment: Millersburg, Iowa, at a later date.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doris; children, Deborah (David) Post, Steven (Shelia) Armstrong and James (Karen) Armstrong; grandchildren, Lisa, Tammy, Jennifer, Adam and Brooke; great-grandchildren, Noah, McKenzie and Sage; a sister, Carolyn DePauw; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Marvin; and great-grandson, Jacob.
Dick was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Grinnell, the son of Ernest and Florence (Johnston) Armstrong. He graduated from Brooklyn High School then served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict. On Feb. 8, 1958, Dick was united in marriage to Doris Cram in Brooklyn. Dick worked as a lineman for Linn County REC for 37 years. Dick enjoyed fishing, gardening and a good joke. He was a handyman and loved his family greatly. Dick was a member of the American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion.
