Arlis M. Sedlacek, 84, a longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at her home in Marengo, Iowa, surrounded by her family. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. All guests are respectfully requested to wear a mask and practice social distancing. There will not be a reception following burial due to the need for masks.
Arlis was born April 25, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, to Arthur and Twila (Myers) Rich. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1954 and maintained friendships with several high school classmates. She worked for Rockwell Collins Airport until 1976, when she had her first child. Arlis married Maurice "Pat" Sedlacek on June 14, 1969, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They bought their home on the river in 1976, where they raised their two children, Shawn and Sara.
Arlis loved spending time with her children and three grandchildren. She could be found making kolaches or cookies with them until late in the evenings. She loved to sew, loved to laugh and spend time with family. She always made a point to attend church at St. Patrick's, and was the first to help if anyone needed her.
Arlis is survived by her children, Sara (Mitch) Magill of Marengo and Shawn (Joy) Sedlacek of Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren, Luke, Samantha and Cade; sisters, Bonnie Christian of Alamo, Texas, and Penny (Jim) Freeze of Hiawatha; and a special sister-in-law and best friend, Lois Jennings of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Katherine Conway; brother, Duane Rich; and her husband, Pat, on Dec. 17, 2019.
