Arlene Read, 96, of Marion, died Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Summit Pointe in Marion. Visitation will be held from 10 until 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 31, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where a memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m.
Arlene was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Melrose, Wis., to Herman and Gertrude (Dahl) Carey. After graduating from junior college, she took a job as a medical secretary at the Mayo Clinic, where she worked from 1940 until 1944. She was united in marriage to Robert Read Sr. on Nov. 12, 1944, in Rochester, Minn. Together, they established Read Photography, over 40 years ago. Arlene was an extremely hard worker, a trait she also instilled in her children.
After retiring, Arlene and Bob relocated to Surprise, Ariz., where they resided for over 20 years. In her retirement, Arlene was very social and loved to travel. She enjoyed playing mahjong, dominoes and cards. She was a lifelong animal lover. Her memory will be treasured by many.
Arlene is survived by her son, Jon (Tina) Read; and stepdaughter, Jeanne (James) Miller, all of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sr., in 2000; sons, Jeffrey and Robert Read Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Mary Read.
