Anne Laverty, 51, a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, passed away from a stroke at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018.
Anne was born Jan. 31, 1967, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Joan (Matias) Mosel and William Stanley. Anne was a graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School and the University of Iowa where she earned B.A., M.B.A. and J.D. degrees. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board. Anne was also a proud member of the Hawkeye Marching Band.
Anne practiced law as a criminal defense and family law attorney in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 27 years. She was most passionate about helping kids, families and the less fortunate.
Anne enjoyed working in her garden, knitting, spending time with her family at Lake Delhi, reading, traveling and cooking. Anne was known for her humor, intelligence and selfless nature.
She is survived by her parents, Joan and James Mosel; husband, John Laverty; daughters, Megan and Emily Laverty; half-sister, Libby Pelka; parents-in-law, Robert and Mary Laverty; brother-in-law, Dr. David (Leslie) Laverty; sister-in-law, Beth Laverty-Withee; aunts, Patricia Gilliatt and Barbara Johnson; cousins, Michael (Kathy) Matias, Matthew and James Matias, and Lindsay Leonetti and Daniel Gilliatt; niece, Allison Laverty; and nephews, Charles Laverty and Jake Withee.
The Laverty family would like to extend immense gratitude to the doctors and staff who cared for Anne at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and St. Luke's Hospital.
There will be a Celebration Of Life service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 1340 Third Ave. SE, where a visitation will be held from 4:30 to service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Cedar Rapids Community Schools Foundation or Kids First Law Center in Cedar Rapids in Anne's name.
