Amana
Anne P. Leonhardt, 88, of Amana, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Middle Amana Community Church in Middle Amana with Elder Emilie Hoppe officiating. Burial will be in Middle Amana Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association.
Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Harry, of Amana; a son, Mark (Tami) of Columbia, S.C.; three grandchildren, Eric of College Station, Texas, Tori of Columbia, S.C., and Nicholas of Columbia, S.C.; a brother, Emil Luft (Glenda) of Huntsville, Ala.; three nieces, Kathlena Luft of Spring Hill, Tenn., Lauren (Ward) Malloy of Houston, Texas, and Anna Marie Luft of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a grandnephew, Connor Luft of Spring Hill, Tenn.; a sister, Paula of Gmunden, Austria; a niece, Karin Frick of Gmunden, Austria; and a nephew, Hans Peter of Gmunden, Austria.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Maria Luft.
Anne was born Feb. 25, 1928, in Oberplan, Sudetenland, which is now the Czech Republic. She attended teachers college until late spring of 1945, when it was closed as the building was needed for a hospital. Her husband-to-be, 1st Lt. Harry A. Leonhardt, was a tank commander in the U.S. Third Army. She met him in Oberplan near the end of the war. After receiving orders to report to a labor camp, her husband-to-be smuggled her across the border into Austria. She came to America in 1947 as part of the War Brides Act; they had been married for almost 69 years.
She worked 10 years in the office of Amana Refrigeration; after her son was born, she worked as school board secretary for Amana Schools for almost 24 years.
Anne enjoyed music and played the piano and accordion and sang. While visiting America, her parents taught some of the Amana people German dances and songs, which later were used in Octoberfest performances in the Amanas. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting and tatting and making many of her own clothes.
Anne was a wonderful wife, sister, mother and grandmother, whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
