Anne T. Hawker, 89, of Independence, passed on Monday, May 12, 2014, at the ABCM Rehabilitation Center East Campus,
following a long illness.
Anne was born Oct. 7, 1924, in Ayer, Scotland, the daughter of James and Agnes Taylor McKillop. She was a graduate of Ayer Scotland Schools and attended Shorts Commercial College for two years. She received her degree in 1940. She met her husband, Norbert H. Hawker, while he was serving as a military police officer in Scotland in 1943. They were later married Nov. 23, 1947, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence. In 1969, she became the director of general relief in Buchanan County and held that position for 22 years, until her retirement in 1990.
Anne is survived by her husband, Norbert H. Hawker; four children, Brenda (Greg) Sage, Independence, Kenneth (Denise) Hawker, Independence, Dawn (Don) Gritton, Independence, and Derick (Lin) Beesley,
Essex, England; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by a sister, Martha Harvey.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Reiff
Funeral Home, & Crematory, Independence, with the Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
