ANNE FUSSELL
Cedar Rapids
Anne Victoria Fussell, 63, of Schaumburg, Ill., passed away following a short illness on Tuesday, June 23, 2014. A memorial mass, by Father Chris Podhajsky, will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Anne V. Fussell was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Jan. 22, 1951, to Richard and Mildred (Neumeister) Fussell. She graduated from Washington High School in 1969 and attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1973 with a bachelor's in education and was certified as a teacher in early childhood education. At an unplanned interview at District 54, Schaumburg, Ill., she was hired on the spot as a kindergarten teacher. She taught kindergarten for 37 years, including 35 years at Campanelli Elementary School. She obtained a master's degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in early childhood special education in 1981 while on sabbatical from District 54. During her teaching career, Anne was privileged to teach the sons and daughters of many former students. Anne always enjoyed the kindergarten students and looked forward to each new school year.
Anne was active in her educational honorary Delta Kappa Gamma International and enjoyed serving in several executive positions since her retirement from teaching in 2009. She enjoyed working on humanitarian projects, Feed the Children, wells in Africa, and books for foreign schools, that she organized for the members and families of her sorority sisters.
Anne is survived by her brother, Jon (Bud) Fussell; her aunt and uncle, Lumir and Norma Newmeister; and cousins, John, Michael and Jeffrey Newmiester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and grandparents, Joseph and Bessie Neumeister and Harold and Martha Fussell.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship fund has been established in Anne's name through Delta Kappa Gamma for education of teachers. Funds may be sent to the family.
