Ann Katherine Sullivan Powers of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at home on December 28, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was 91. Services; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church where the family will receive friends at the visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5 in Hiawatha. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. The burial will be at St. Clement’s Cemetery in Dunlap, IL at a later date.
She was born on Feb. 25, 1932 to John Charles Sullivan and Dorothy (Komensky) Sullivan in Davenport, IA. Ann attended Illinois State University in Normal, IL and graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. She taught music for more than 30 years in Dunlap, IL; Aurora, IL; Sterling, IL; Holy Cross, IA; and Guttenberg, IA. Ann served on the school board at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, IL. She also owned and managed rental properties in Illinois. In her later years, she kept busy by making her own “waste-made” greeting cards, sending hundreds of cards for every occasion each year to friends and family.
Music was a lifelong passion. Ann was the choir director for St. Mary Catholic Church in Guttenberg, IA. As a founding member of the Guttenberg German Band and ANZ’s Band, she traveled throughout the Midwest and Europe sharing her love of music with others. She was a talented pianist and played trumpet in the New Horizons Band in Cedar Rapids until the age of 91.
Ann was predeceased by her husband Don Powers. She is survived by her five children: Anne Wilk, Cedar Rapids, IA; Terry (Cindy) Powers, Long Beach, CA; Tom (Nancy) Powers, Casselberry, FL; Mary (Mark) Rinehart, Cedar Rapids, IA; and Kathy (Shawn) Moser, Hiawatha, IA; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Her siblings are Mary (Kevin) Carter, Dunlap, IL and Tim (Erna) Sullivan, Boca Raton, FL; and three deceased brothers, John, Pat, and Mickey.
The family wishes to thank those who provided outstanding care and joy during her final days, especially Visiting Angels, Gentiva and Heartland Hospice.
