Andrews, George A.
George A. Andrews, 82, of Manchester, died Sunday, March 13, 2011, at home from complications of ALS. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17, at First Lutheran Church in Manchester by the Rev. Dr. Jean Rabary and the Rev. Al Oman. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Manchester. Additional visitation one hour before services Thursday at the church. Burial, with military rites will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
George was born August 25, 1928, in Buchanan County, the son of Lloyd and Velma (Reed) Andrews. On Oct. 1, 1950, he was united in marriage to Fern L. Wilson at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fairbank, Iowa. George joined the United States Army on Dec. 6, 1950, serving in Germany during World War II. George owned and operated the Andrew Brothers Standard Station with his brother for 25 years as well as the Robo Car Wash. He also sold real estate and farmed.
George was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Manchester for over 60 years, American Legion Post 45, a member of the Manchester Golf & Country Club and a past-member of the Manchester Lion's and Jaycees. He served on the Oakland Cemetery Board for 20 years. George loved farming and fishing, especially going to Canada with his kids fishing for many years.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Fern Andrews of Manchester; one son, Max (Terri) Andrews of Manchester; two grandchildren, Chris (Caroline) Stogdill and Jason (Kelly) Stogdill; four great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Austin, Ashley and Alec; one brother, Charles (Geri) Andrews of Columbus Junction; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Andrews and Elsie Wilson; one brother-in-law, Glenn Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Velma Andrews; one son, Michael George Andrews in 1971; and one brother, Kenneth Andrews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Regional Medical Hospice of Comfort or the First Lutheran Church in Manchester.
