Andrew "Tom" Flach, 74, of Toddville, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, with a prayer vigil beginning at 4:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at
10 a.m. Monday, March 14, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 4949 Council St. NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with Father Phil Thompson officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in Anamosa, Iowa. Guests are respectfully requested to wear face masks and practice social distancing.
Tom was born on Dec. 16, 1947, in East St. Louis, Ill., the son of Edward and Mary (Willoughby) Flach. He graduated from Hampton High School in Hampton, Iowa, and went on to obtain his Bachelor's of Science and Master's of Science in electrical engineering from Southern Illinois University. Tom served honorably in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. On June 6, 1981, Tom was united in marriage to Judy R. Riniker at St. Mary's Church in Lamont, Iowa. He worked for Collins Aerospace for over 40 years. Tom was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church and Walker American Legion Post # 376. He loved cars, investigating the latest electronic technology, gadgets, and was very handy and could fix just about anything. Tom enjoyed music, attending the Iowa State Fair, Kernels games and traveling for work and pleasure. Tom will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tom is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Judy of Toddville; two sisters, Nancy (Bryan) Massey of Memphis, Tenn., and Mary (Tim) Ayers of Madison, Ala.; brother, Jim Flach of Carbondale, Ill.; nephew, Josh (Kim) Ayers of Colorado; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin (Wendie) Riniker of Cedar Rapids, Ruth (Gary) Woerdehoff of Dubuque, Iowa, Mary (John) Newton of Onalaska, Wis., Michael (Anna Mary) Riniker of Anamosa, Iowa, and Linda (Terry) Barschow of Marion, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Steve (Julie) Woerdehoff, Cate (Matt) Stratemeier, Rachel (Aaron) Zivney, Suzanne (Nick) Peterson, Rebecca (Austin) Lee, Marilyn (Matt) Clifford and Elizabeth Riniker; and numerous great-nieces and -nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law, Steve and Rose Riniker.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, a memorial fund has been established in Tom's memory.
