Anderson, Dorothy Elizabeth Hanson
Dorothy Elizabeth Hanson Anderson, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. with a rosary to follow on Tuesday, where friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m., at Teahen Funeral Home and Wednesday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church.
Dorothy is survived by three children, Andy of Hot Springs, Ark., and Sue (Dan) Begley and Janet (Tom) Marbach, both of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) Anderson, Ryan (April) Anderson, Danielle (Donald) Hoppes-Woods, AJ (Kelly) Begley and Megan Begley; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walter (Kathy) Hanson and Albert “Barney” (Pat) Hanson, both of Cedar Rapids; sister, Catheryn Hayward of Hiawatha; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; infant daughter, Donna; granddaughter, Elizabeth Begley; four brothers, Herbert, William, Harry and Robert; and two sisters, Geri Elias and Margaret Fitzpatrick.
Dorothy was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Herbert and Mary (Fitzgerald) Hanson. She married Bill Anderson on May 14, 1948, in Cedar Rapids. He died on February 14, 1968. She worked at Siebke and Hoyt and Nelson Electric for many years retiring in 1990.
Dorothy loved spending time with her grandchildren teaching them how to play cards. She also enjoyed playing Bingo and gambling. Dorothy was very proud of her National Penmanship Award she won when she was younger.
Dorothy was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was involved in many of the church's organizations, a member of Daughters of Isabella, Catholic Daughters of America, National Catholic Society of Foresters, the Dominic Club and held many offices within these national and local Catholic organizations, the American Business Women's Association and Women in Construction Association.
Dorothy was a volunteer at The Carl and Mary Koehler History Center, the Linn County Genealogical Society, Senior Advocates and many other numerous organizations.
Memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Camp Courageous or St. Patrick Catholic Church.
