Anderson, Darwin 'Andy'
Darwin “Andy” Anderson, 89, of Coralville, died peacefully Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Lantern Park Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.Saturday at Lensing's Oak Hill, Coralville. Burial, with military honors, will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Darwin was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Elliott, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Niema (Mainquist) Anderson. He was a 1940 graduate of Stanton High School. Following his graduation he moved to San Diego. He returned to Stanton, where he enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1942. He served as a medic in the 5th Army in Africa and Italy. On Dec. 8, 1946, Darwin married Edith Fredrickson in Red Oak, Iowa.
They moved to Coralville in 1954. In 1963, he began his career as a maintenance mechanic with the University of Iowa Physical Plant.
Darwin was a member of Parkview Evangelical Free Church and American Legion Post 721. Most important to him was time spent with his family and traveling. He was adept at everything from fixing watches to welding. He designed jewelry and did wood carving. These beautiful creations which Darwin gave to family and friends will keep his memory alive for future generations.
Darwin is survived by his wife, Edith; and their three children, Gary (Nancy) Anderson of Coralville and their son Christopher of Chicago, Beth Anderson of Coralville, and Neal (Jessica) Anderson and their sons Nathan and Kyle, all of Coralville; sister-in-law, Donna Anderson of Lincoln, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dwight; and an infant sister, Mary Louise.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Parkview Evangelical Free Church or Iowa City Hospice.
