Following a 16-month battle with ovarian cancer, Amy Marie Smothers passed away peacefully May 20, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family.
Amy Marie Smothers was born June 3, 1966, to Ann Elizabeth Slattery Smothers and Terry Alan Smothers in Iowa City, Iowa.
She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1984. In 1988, Amy received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a World History major from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Amy was one of the first female athletes to receive a half academic and half athletic scholarship and lettered in softball all four years. In 1993, she graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Ga., with a Master of Fine Arts, Historic Preservation. She was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award in historic preservation.
Her career included six years on the State of Iowa Architectural Historian Consultant List and State of Iowa Historian Consultant List, and a three-year term with the City of Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission. Aside from her many hours in project management, structural consultation, gallery installation and volunteering, she was employed by Renaissance Restoration Inc., Hinge Gallery, Orcutt Associates, Iowa City Community School District, Kohls and Target.
Amy enjoyed photography, drawing, gardening, music, reading, travel and sports.
Amy is survived by her parents; son, Hudson Fredric Coccoluto; former husband, Gary Charles Coccoluto; sister, Jennifer (Ron) Brida, and children, Colin Miller and Logan Miller; brother, Anthony (Joan Spahn) Smothers, and children, Lauren, Jacob, Olivia and Claire Smothers; eight aunts; nine uncles; 18 cousins; and a large extended family she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert and Berniece Smothers and Thomas and Bessie Slattery; and one uncle, Kevin Robert Smothers.
A Celebration of Life gathering for family and friends will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City (next to Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service). Amy has donated her body to the Deeded Body Program, Department of Anatomy, the University of Iowa. Amy suggested planting a tree or anything that grows in memory of her or a charity of choice.
Amy's family wishes to thank Dr. Gregory Bozek, Dr. Jean-Marie Stephan, Dr. Cassim Igram, the oncology team, the staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Iowa City Hospice, as well as, the family and friends who loved and cared for her.
