Alyson O’Connell, 33, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with her family by her side. A visitation will be held from 4 -7 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at The Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids.
Alyson was born November 7, 1990, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Anthony “Tony” Bishop and Theresa (Brownlee) Szuminski. She graduated from West Burlington High School, Class of 2009. Alyson was united in marriage to Brandon O’Connell on April 23, 2022, at the Veterans Coliseum. Alyson took great pride in her work at the Chrome Horse Saloon, where she worked for 17 years. She enjoyed cooking, shopping, golfing, and spending time with her pets, Bruno and Mars. Alyson and Brandon enjoyed traveling, especially to the Lake of the Ozarks, Las Vegas, and Florida. Above all else, she cherished time spent with Brandon and Kaylin, her sister, Ashli, niece, Briar, and all of her friends and family.
Survivors include her husband, Brandon O’Connell; bonus daughter, Kaylin O’Connell; mother and stepfather, Theresa and Dale Szuminski of Eldridge, Iowa; siblings, Ashli (Daniel) Sherman of Cedar Rapids, A.J. Lee of Burlington, Iowa, Madison Bishop of Ankeny, Iowa, Elisabeth “Elli” Bishop of Ottumwa, Quentin (Haley) Bishop, of Ottumwa, Zach and Brady Szuminski of Eldridge; in-laws, Pat and Sheryl O’Connell of Marion, Iowa; stepmother, Lisa Bishop; stepfather, Jeff Lee; nieces and nephews, Briar Sherman, Jason Sherman, Kellen Murphy, and Keegan Murphy; sister-in-law, Candice (Ryan) Murphy; and grandfather, Dan (Karen) Brownlee of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her father, Tony Bishop.
In keeping with her giving spirit, Alyson will continue to live on through her gift of organ donation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to be used towards a college fund for Kaylin.
