Alvie "Al" Kelley, 86, of Anamosa, formerly of Central City, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, at Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa. A memorial service will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at American Legion Post 421 in Central City.
He is survived by his children, Kevin, Dan, Doug, Bradley and Kristen Kelley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Orval James Kelley; and his sister, Lillie May (Busch).
Alvie "Al" Kelley was born Aug. 8, 1928, to James and Elsie (Pyrtle) Kelley in Golden City, Mo. The family settled in Springville, Iowa, when Al was a child. Al enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve honorably in Korea during the 1950-51 wartime. While raising a family, and working several jobs, he attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. After graduating, he taught math, industrial arts and driver's education for his entire professional career.
He was passionate about students and sports, and coached high school girls' softball, basketball and track, both as an assistant and head coach, reaching state championships (West Central), district finals and many winning conference seasons with the Central City Wildcats basketball teams. After retiring from teaching and coaching, he served many years as an officer with City State Bank in Central City, while he practice as a Realtor and insurance sales agent.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
The family is thankful for the wonderfully personal and professional care of Jones Regional Hospital and nursing staff and the UnityPoint Hospice caregivers and facilitators.
