Alva Glen "Al" Battin III of Marion died unexpect-edly from a heart attack on Jan. 16, 2015, while riding his bike in Sahuarita, Ariz. Al chose to be an organ donor.
Al is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathy Battin; his daughter, Sarah Battin-Lopez (Sonny Lopez), and his three granddaughters, Brianna (6), Hannah (5) and Gianna (2 months), of Sahuarita; his daughter, Ellen Battin of Ankeny; his sister, Kathy Gillum (Mark Gillum) of Norwalk; his niece, Jennifer Hartman (Gillum), and her son, Austin of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alva Glen Battin Jr., and his mother, Gladys Battin (Bigelow).
Al was born July 11, 1952, to Alva Jr. and Gladys Battin (Bigelow). He graduated from Grand View College in 1972 and the University of Northern Iowa in 1975, with a degree in elementary education. He married Kathy (Gibbons) in 1974. Al worked at The Gazette as metro circulation manager for 24 years, three years as warehouse manager at RockTenn in Iowa City and most recently, as seasonal worker for the city of Cedar Rapids Parks Department.
Al was an avid cyclist and enjoyed spending time in Sahuarita, visiting his three granddaughters, including the birth of his youngest granddaughter on Nov. 5, 2014.
A drop-in reception will be held at Lowe Park, 4500 N. 10th St. in Marion on Sunday, Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appetizers and refreshments will be served.
