Althoff, Alice Marilyn
Alice Marilyn Althoff, 82, Hot Springs Village, Ark., formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died at 4 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2012, in Atlanta, Ga. Marilyn was the mother of Anne (Steve) Plotz, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. June 16 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 295 Balearic Road, Hot Springs Village, Ark. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marilyn Althoff Scholarship Fund, with checks payable to PEO Foundation (www.PEOInternational.org) and mailed to Barbara Bone-Scholarship Executor, 4841 Stone Moss Path, Hoschton, GA 30548. Condolences may be sent to the family at .
Marilyn was born March 9, 1930, in Mount Vernon, Iowa. After graduating from Mount Vernon High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Millikin University, Decatur. Marilyn (Gray) married Gerald (Jerry) Henry Althoff on February 14, 1953. He survives.
She retired from King-Lar Co., Decatur, in 1987 and moved to Hot Springs Village. Marilyn was an active parishioner at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, served as president of the Hot Springs Village chapter of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization), president of the church guild, and participated in a wide array of civic and philanthropic organizations. An accomplished cook, Marilyn's kitchen became the central gathering point during countless family holiday celebrations. Her passions included gardening, music, reading and sewing. A deeply religious woman, she was a member of numerous church choirs throughout her life, and the family's grand piano occupied a place of prominence in her home for many years. More than anything, she immersed herself in caring for and nurturing a large, tightly knit family.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Henry Althoff; seven children, Anne (Steve) Plotz, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gary (Reggie) Althoff, Dallas, Texas, Barbara (Jim) Bone, Atlanta, Ga., Linda (Al) Bowman, Normal, Ill., Mark (Teresa) Althoff, Chicago, Ill., Lisa (Ian) Symmonds, Portland, Ore., and David Althoff, Chicago, Ill.; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
