They started their life together farming near Scotch Grove, Iowa, later moving to Monticello. Alfreda was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. She worked many retail jobs, including over 24 years at Schultz Bros. Alfreda and Vernon loved camping and fishing; she loved working in the yard and taking her dog for walks.
Alfreda moved to Pennington Square Assisted Living in 2004. Vernon passed away in 2005. She loved to listen to music and sing along. She enjoyed the activities at assisted living and helping others. In July 2010, she entered Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center, also enjoying the activities - especially singing and music
- until her death.
She is survived by two sons, Greg (Charlotte) Lange of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dennis Lange of Batavia, Ill.; two grandsons, Travis (Lindsay) Lange and Nathan (Jill) Lange of Marion, Iowa; two granddaughters, Carrie (Chance) Wolinski and Chelsea Lange (Ryan) of Batavia, Ill.; three great-granddaughters, Darby and Tamzin Lange and Lotte Lange; a great-grandson, Lance Wolinski; a sister, Dorothy (Bing) Postel; and a brother, LaVern (June) Ulferts, both of Anamosa; a half-sister, Linda (Marvin) Smulevitz of Savannah, Ga.; stepsisters, Helen Heiken of Monticello and Wilma Cox of Anamosa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon (Bud ) Lange; daughter-in-law, Kathy Lange; her parents; stepfather, Bill Oltmanns; stepbrother, John Oltmanns; stepsisters, Rachel Griffith and Elda French; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Morton and Joyce Serbousek.
The family would like to thank the staff at Pennington Square, Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Above and Beyond Hospice for all the wonderful care given to Alfreda over these many years and last difficult days.
