Alma M. Funk, 93, of Iowa City and Hills, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Atrium Village. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A parish wake service and rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hills. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Church.
Alma was born Dec. 4, 1924, the daughter of Charles and Agnes (Dvorsky) Novotny. She was raised on a farm near Solon and graduated from Solon High School. Alma graduated from Paris Academy in Cedar Rapids and worked as a beautician at the Roosevelt Hotel Salon. She married Richard "Dick" Funk on Sept. 18, 1950, at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. After raising her children, Alma was a crossing guard for over 21 years at Park Road and Lee Street for Lincoln Elementary School. In addition, Alma enjoyed being an Avon representative for many years. She was a lifelong member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters and attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church before joining St. Joseph Church in Hills. Alma was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed knitting in her free time. She enjoyed time outdoors with summer camping trips.
Alma is survived by her children, Barbara Douglass of Columbia, Mo., Mary Lou Funk of Lone Tree, Jan Saslaw of Rockville, Md., Tom Funk (Marilyn Darland) of Hills, Iowa, and JoAnn Turner of Rockville, Md.; a brother, Ray Novotny of Center Point, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Chandler Douglass and Cody Douglass of Columbia, Mo., Chris Finley of Lone Tree, Jacki (Derek) Komp of Center Point, Sakkara Turner and Amenta Turner of Rockville, Md., and Mae Saslaw of Portland, Ore.; one great-grandchild, Warren Komp; and several nieces and nephews.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Agnes Novotny; husband, Richard; sister, Irene Shima; and son-in-law, Bob Finley.
