Allen F. Ernst, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Center Point, died Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Northbrook Manor. Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Vecca of Farmington; a son, Eric (Denise) of Coon Rapids; and a sister, Margaret Kacena of Cedar Rapids. He also is survived by five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Judy Ernst.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, David; and one brother, Dean.
Allen was born May 16, 1929, in Atkins, the son of George and Therese Kollenkark Ernst. He married June M. Kinney on July 7, 1951, in Newhall. June passed away in 2013.
Allen retired from Collins after 30-plus years of service, as well as being the owner and operator of Ernst Sales in Center Point.
He had been an avid Cubs fan since the 1940s and planned several summer family trips that included several Cubs baseball games.
Allen proudly served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He loved all animals and had a variety of pets that included turtles, goats, raccoons, dogs, cats and guinea pigs.
Allen was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend, whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Cedar Valley Humane Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
