Alice Jane Clausen was born April 29, 1923, the daughter of John and Dora (Goody) Clausen. After graduating from University High and prior to marriage, she worked for Hills Bank as one of three employees of the bank at the time. On March 10, 1946, she married Cecil Smith. A short time later, Cecil was drafted to serve in World War II. Upon his return, they moved to a farm south of Iowa City, and would remain there until recently. Alice and Cecil made the state fair a family tradition for many years and looked forward to going each summer. Together, they also enjoyed frequent trips to the Brick Haus in Amana.
Alice was an excellent cook! She truly enjoyed cooking and had an extensive cookbook collection. She also enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers and strawberry beds. Alice dearly loved her four grandsons and always looked forward to their visits.
Her family includes her husband, Cecil; children, Charlotte Thomann of Riverside, Alan Smith (friend, Christy) of Marion, Donna Rossman (Richard) of Lone Tree and Tena Smith (Al Riggan) of Ainsworth; grandchildren, Robert Thomann (Anna), Paul Thomann (Sarah), Kyle Rossman (Barbara) and Keaton Rossman; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Clausen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Ron Thomann; brothers, Chris and Donald Clausen; and sister-in-law, Shirley Clausen.
