Alice Marie Smith, 93, of Ridgeview Assisted Living, Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, with her family by her side. Funeral Mass:
10 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Murphy. Burial: Sts. Patrick & Paul Cemetery, rural Watkins. A vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m., and after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
Alice is survived by her children, Carolyn (Roger) Silhanek of Belle Plaine, Kenneth (Sandra) Smith of rural Watkins and Ronald Smith and David Smith of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Glenn (Letha) of Blairstown and Richard (Kim) of Newhall; sisters-in-law, Norma Sykora of Arizona, Kathy Etscheidt of Newhall and Theresa Smith of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, on July 28, 2017; daughter-in-law, Jessica Smith; siblings, Robert Etscheidt and William Etscheidt; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann (William) Etscheidt.
Alice was born Dec. 28, 1924, near Watkins, the daughter of John and Elsie Brecht Etscheidt. She attended country school and graduated from Norway High School in 1942. In her early years she worked at Naxcera Bakery in Cedar Rapids. On Sept. 24, 1946, Alice married the love of her life, George Henry Smith Jr., in Watkins. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Alice was a wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma who was happiest in her home tending to her family. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and sewing was her passion for many years. Alice was much-loved and will be greatly missed. She truly was part of the greatest generation.
