ALICE IRENE (VAN HAMME) SCHIRMER

Alice Irene (Van Hamme) Schirmer, 62, of Vinton, passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Per Alice's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial gathering: 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home, conducted by Pastor Adam Howell. A private committal service at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Greeley, Iowa, will take place at a later date.
Alice was born Sept. 30, 1954, at St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Ardis (McKusker) Van Hamme of Victor, Iowa. She attended St. John's Catholic School through the sixth grade. She then attended junior and senior high school in Victor and graduated from HLV Community Schools in 1972. She attended Mount Mercy College, graduating in 1976. On Feb. 11, 1978, Alice was united in marriage to Anthony (Tony) Schirmer. Although this union had no children, she was blessed with three children and six grandchildren whom she cherished as her own.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Tony; her sisters, Sandra Arnold of Victor, Marie Louis of Leon and Mary (Ron) McDonald of Maquoketa; her brother, John (Donita) Van Hamme of Victor; three children, Shareen Kearney and her sons, Brian and Mitch of Shellsburg, Rich Schirmer and his sons, Nick and Brandon, Mary (Tom) Nathan and Christina Harrelson, all of Vinton; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ardis; father, Raymond; sister, Linda; and two nieces.
Alice was a loving and caring person where God, faith, family and friends meant everything, and she will be missed very much. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends from college, and getting together with family and other friends. She enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Packers. Alice fought a courageous battle of numerous illnesses, including three types of cancer, with grace and perseverance.
