Alice Mahon
ALICE LOVRIEN MAHON Iowa City Alice L. Mahon died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence, Iowa City, at 101 years. She was born July 21, 1915, in Humboldt, Iowa, to Fred C. Lovrien and Jennie French Lovrien. Alice was a 1937 graduate of Iowa State University in home economics. Alice married the love of her life, George A. Mahon, in Spencer, Iowa, on Dec. 28, 1940. They met while working in Chicago and moved to Minneapolis, George's hometown, before he left for the U.S. Navy in World War II. After the war, they settled in the Minneapolis area, where Alice raised two daughters and became the perfect homemaker, while George pursued a career in accounting and as an executive with IDS. When the Mahons retired in 1975, they moved to Solvang, Calif. They especially enjoyed golf and traveling during their retirement years. In November 1997, two-and-a-half years after George's death, Alice moved to Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City to be closer to her children and her grandchildren. During her years here, she enjoyed serving on Oaknoll committees, taking long walks, playing bridge and writing poetry. Alice is survived by two daughters, Carol (James) Moenke, Roberts, Wis., and Elizabeth (Paul) Nichols, Iowa City; two grandchildren, Daniel (Mandi) Nichols and Deanna Nichols, great-grandchild, Arya Belle Nichols; and step-great-grandchildren, Xavier and Amaya McFadden, all of Iowa City; a brother, Arthur (Elsie) Lovrien, Clarksville; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 7, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence, Iowa City. Internment is anticipated to be April 8 at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis. Memorials are preferred to Oaknoll Foundation, Iowa City, or to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis, MN. Online condolences may be sent to lensingfuneral.com.
