Alice Evelyn Hamlett, 96, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood. She was born on March 18, 1927, at home near Arlington, in rural Fayette County, the daughter of Harley A. and Gladys M. (Welch) Probasco. As a young girl she and her family moved to North Dakota for a few years, eventually the family settled in the Edgewood area. Alice graduated from Edgewood High School with the class of 1944. After her schooling she worked at a bank in Cedar Rapids for a short time before her wedding.
On October 3, 1945, Alice was united in marriage to Lyle W. Hamlett at Wood Methodist Church, near Wood Center. Four children were born to this union. After her marriage, Alice worked at the Edgewood Convalescent Home for over 29 years, eventually being in charge of the Dietary Department.
Alice enjoyed playing cards and gardening. She did a lot of embroidery and was an excellent cook. Alice was a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She most of all cherished the times spent with her family.
Survivors include her four children, Eileen (Richard) Waterman of Manchester, Tom Hamlett of Beloit, Wisconsin, Jim (Karen Salvage) of State College, Pennsylvania, and Cathy (Lary) Shaw of Edgewood; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren with two on the way; brother-in-law, Bryce (Jeanette) Hamlett of Edgewood; sisters-in-law, Sue Probasco of Springfield, Missouri, and Margaret Probasco of Cedar Rapids.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle Hamlett in 2013; grandson, Russell Waterman; and brothers, Arthur, Gerald, and Joe Probasco.
