ALICE E. GAHRING

Alice E. Gahring, 101, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, at Rock Ridge Residential Care Center in Shellsburg.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery, rural Newhall. Friends may call at the church in Newhall from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday. A memorial fund has been established.
Alice was born to Robert and Bessie (Blinkinsop) Dixon on Sep. 16, 1916, in Miller, S.D. Alice graduated from Belle Plaine High School with the class of 1934. She received a Normal Training Teaching Certificate and taught country school in Benton County for eight years. She was united in marriage to Merlyn Gahring in Kirksville, Mo., on Aug. 17, 1941. Together they farmed at La Porte City, Keystone and Rowley, before retiring and moving to Newhall in 1992. Merlyn passed away in 2009. Alice was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall.
In earlier years, Alice and Merlyn enjoyed going to dances, playing cards and traveling with friends. Alice was an avid seamstress and sewed many garments and quilts for her family. She loved to bake pie; cherry was a favorite. She was a 4-H leader, an Avon Lady and a member of the La Porte Neighborhood Card Club for over 40 years. But the highlight of her life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children, Marjorie Werning of Newhall, Larry (Joyce) Gahring of Atkins and Sherri Gahring of Roseville, Minn.; six grandchildren, Greg (Tami) Werning of Tiffin, Gene (Andrea) Werning of Conroe, Texas, Barry (Brenda) Werning of Blairstown, Karie (Shannon) Kelty of Urbana, Chris (Daleea) Gahring of Urbana and Cory Johnson of Denver, Colo.; and 10 great-grandchildren, Carly Greenfield, Lindsay Kelty, Sydney Kelty, Jacob Kelty, Marissa Clark, Caiden Gahring, Samantha Werning, Madison Werning, Nathan Werning and Danielle Werning.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merlyn; son-in-law, Glenn Werning; and siblings, Robert Dixon, William Dixon, Roberta Saunders, Reatha Kluser and Gerald Dixon (in childhood).
The family would like to thank the staff at Rock Ridge Care Center and UnityPoint Hospice for the care and compassion given to Alice.
