Alice Smothers Barta, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior and the love of her life, Bob, on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Silver Pines after a three year courageous battle with melanoma. Funeral service: 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Services conducted by Pastor David Renfro. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Alice liked to be comfortable; please dress casual.
Survivors include her sister, Laura Ruble; nieces and nephews, who she loved as her own children, Steve, Karen, Sue, Kathi, Scott, Loretta, Ed, Pat and Cindi; great-nephews and nieces; and great-great-nephews and nieces.
Alice was born April 26, 1927, the daughter of Joseph and Leona (Felix) Smothers. She had two brothers, Edward and Joseph; and one sister, Laura. Alice married Robert Leonard Barta on April 16, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 46 years, where she was baptized and confirmed. Alice had been a member of the Fellowship and Joy Group, where she helped stuff the bulletins. Her church was very important to her.
Alice had a love for her Savior and church as well as camping and fishing with friends and family. Before moving to Silver Pines in 2008, she had made her home at The Meadows on Memorial Drive. She had many special friends whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Leona; husband, Robert; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Clara Smothers; brother, Joseph; brother-in-law, Charles Ruble; nephews, Joseph Smothers and Richard Ruble; and great-niece, Caitlin Smothers.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to her niece, Loretta; Dr. Jason Booth; the entire staff at Silver Pines; her Mercy hospice team; Christine, Christa, Rachel and Sara; her special nurses, Candy and Joanne for the loving care you gave her these last months; and to Trinity Lutheran Church, Pastor Renfro, Pastor Horne, Larry, Deanna, Marie, Jeanette and Jan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the family, in Alice's memory.
All are invited to attend a luncheon at Trinity Lutheran Church following the burial.
