Alfred J. "Fritz" Conrad, 97, of Harper, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, at Halcyon House in Washington.
Fritz was born March 24, 1920, in rural Dallas, Iowa, to John and Mary (Schneider) Conrad. He served in the 119th Infantry in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Aug. 21, 1943, Fritz married Jeanette Striegel at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. Fritz was an equipment operator for the Natural Gas Pipeline in Harper for 40 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, V.F.W., was a third and fourth degree in the Knights of Columbus, and served as mayor of Harper for 34 years.
Survivors include six children, Gary (Pamela) Conrad of Monroe, N.C., Carolyn (Richard) Jacobs of Pace, Fla., Douglas Conrad of Washington, Daniel Conrad of Washington, Richard (Dixie) Conrad of Washington and Patrick Conrad and special friend, Vicki Baker, of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Luke Schoenlein of Perrysburg, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanette; six sisters, Pricilla Harlow, Sister Lugardis, Marguerite Conklin, Edna Spicer, Frances Barga and Genevieve Schoenlein; and four brothers, Marcel Conrad, Father Anthony Conrad, Victor Conrad and Adrian Conrad.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Father Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for Holy Trinity Parish, Hospice of Washington County or the American Cancer Society. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Fritz and his family. Tributes may be made at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
