Survivors include his wife, Maxine; his children, Mary (Jim) Herb and Jim Loukota; three grandchildren, Dennis (Terri) Herb, Rudy (Sondra) Herb and Denise Herb; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Jennie Boyer and Mildred Anderson.
Al was born Aug. 21, 1921, the son of Albert and Mary (Pstoka) Loukota, in Hayfield, Iowa. He served his country with the United States Navy during World War II. On Aug. 22, 1953, Al was united in marriage to Maxine Walker for over 60 years.
For over 50 years, he worked as a sheet metal worker and was a member of Local #263. In his youth he was a member of the YMCA and was an excellent swimmer. Al loved to go mushroom hunting. He remained active his entire life. His hobbies were working on projects in his home or those of friends and family. Al was a perfectionist and was skilled in many areas. He was admired by people for what he was able to do even in his later years. If you had a job to be done or were stranded on a desert island, he was the man to call. He left behind many unfinished projects. Al will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The family gives a special thanks to the staff at West Ridge and Mercy Hospice for their loving care given to Al.
Memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Al.
