ALAN OTTO FINGER
Coggon
Alan Otto Finger, 78, of Coggon, Iowa, passed away from complications following a stroke on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, at the Hiawatha Care Center. He was born on May 12, 1943, in Waterloo, the son of Otto and Margaret (Lynch) Finger. Al graduated from Fayette High School (1961) and from Upper Iowa University (1965). Al began his 35-year instrumental music teaching career at Coggon High School, which became North Linn. He also coached softball, golf and baseball. Al spent many summers as owner–operator of the Troy Mills Drive-In.
On June 12, 1971, Al was united in marriage to Kathy Short at St. John Catholic Church in Coggon. The family made their home in Coggon. He was a faithful member of St. John Catholic Church and had served as the choir director there for decades. Al also served as a cemetery trustee at Mount Olivet Cemetery for many years.
Al loved being outside and especially enjoyed tending to his lawn and garden. He loved to golf with friends and family. Al enjoyed fishing and his trips to Canada. He was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, any Iowa college, North Linn Lynx and Cadott Hornet fan. Al enjoyed attending all of his "grands" events. He will be remembered for his quick wit and colorful jokes. He never passed up an opportunity to share a good story or make someone laugh. Even when faced with serious health issues, Al kept his sense of humor. Most of all, Al loved his family and spending time with them.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Kathy Finger of Coggon; three children, Adam (Nicki) Finger of Coggon, Amy (Steve) Roth of Cadott, Wis., and Alex (Bobbie Dlouhy) Finger of Coggon; nine grands, Marah and Brody Fisher, Conner, Josie and Cooper Roth, Blair Finger, and Wyatt, Olivia and Gabe Dlouhy; a brother-in-law, Leonard Zeller; and special aunt, Vera Randall.
Al was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Judy Zeller.
